For currency exchange purpose, you can go for any commercial banks in the country. However, you may want to exchange your money at those private money changers for a better exchange rate.
Don't know where to find a private moneychanger? Don't worry; you can get one in most of the shopping complexes in the country.

Anyway, preparing yourself with enough cash in the Malaysia currency is important, because almost all transactions in the country are made in Malaysia Ringgit (MYR) only. And yes, credit cards do help too. The common one is Visa and Master card, but not American Express. This few years, American Express card has been more popular compared to last time, but I'm still not so confident for it in Ipoh.
The government used to restricts the buy/sell of Ringgit Malaysia (RM) outside of the country ever since the financial crisis in 1997. However, the restriction has been lifted now. Anyway, you are still advised to exchange all the money needed into your origin country's currency before you take off from Malaysia, just to be safe. Or perhaps you are going to keep it for your next trip to Malaysia again. ^_^
