The Ways Getting To Ipoh

Choose the best way for yourself to suit your personal needs!

Getting to Ipoh from Kuala Lumpur

By Flight

Although there is a domestic airport in Ipoh, the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport, it has been inactive for quite some times. It used to provide a domestic flight per day from KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) to Ipoh.

The only flight available now is from Medan, Indonesia provided by Merpati Airline.

Anyway, there is rumor about re-open of flight route between Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh by a budget airline. If so, I surely will update the information here. =)

By Train

Great news: the KL to Ipoh double track train service started on 1st December 2008!

Before this, there is only a daily conventional train service from Kuala Lumpur KTM station to Ipoh railway station, which departs at 8.45pm and arrives at 1.05am.

But now, the new Express Shuttle Train Service is available for you to travel within KL and Ipoh. It's more convenient with more frequent train schedule. 5 shuttle services a day from Ipoh and also KL.

Furthermore, you can reach Ipoh faster too because the journey has shorten to about 3 hours only. This is about the same time consumed by bus.

And how about the ticket price? It's only RM18 for second class and RM10 for economy class seats. Plus, there is discount for children and senior citizens (not available in weekends and public holidays). If I'm not mistaken, the discount is up to half price.

The four-coach trains will stop for one minute each at Batu Gajah, Kampar, Tapah Road, Sungkai, Slim River, Behrang, Tanjong Malim, Kuala Kubu Baru, Rawang, Sungai Buloh and Kepong Sentral for passengers to disembark or get on board.

Daily departures from Ipoh getting to KL Sentral:
5am, 9am, 1pm, 5pm, 9pm

Daily departures from KL Sentral getting to Ipoh:
5am, 9am, 1pm, 5pm, 9.45pm

Last but not least, the commuter will take over the train service in 2010 and further shorten the journey to 2 hours 15 minutes. I'm looking forward to it excitedly!

By Bus

Last time, you can only take a bus to Ipoh from Puduraya bus station, which is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city.

But now, there is a new bus service provided straightaway from KLIA to Ipoh by a company called YoYo. This really saves you a lot of time since you escaped yourself from any traffic jam possibilities in the Kuala Lumpur city. After about 3 and a half hours drive, the bus will stop at the terminal at Jalan Bercham, Ipoh.

If you wish to start your bus journey from Puduraya bus station, the bus fare would be RM17.60. It will arrive at Medan Gopeng bus station after about 3 hours drive. Medan Gopeng is located at Jalan Gopeng.

By Taxi

After you reach KLIA, you can take a taxi straightaway to Ipoh too. It's about 3 hours drive to reach Ipoh.

Getting to Ipoh by taxi is one of the fastest ways. There is no need to get back into the traffic-jammed KL city for bus/train transit. However, it's expensive.

By Car/Self-driving

Another way to have more flexible time schedule is to get a rental car, but then you should be good at reading map and look out for signboard. It shouldn't be any problem along the way from KLIA to Ipoh using the North-South Expressway; the actual challenge will be getting around Ipoh later. Just to remind you that the speed limit is 90-110km/hr all along the highway.

The toll fees that you have to pay is about RM27 (depends on which entrance/exit is used) per trip.

In addition, if you get a rental car, you would be able to visit places around Ipoh city. There are some interesting places located far from Ipoh city, such as Gua Tempurung, Kellie Castle etc.
